About Anne

Hello and welcome

I’m a garden designer and columnist, and my mission is to help you make the most of your outside space – while making the process easy and enjoyable for you.   I believe very strongly that you can benefit hugely from having a garden in your life, and – many people don’t realise this – you don’t have to be a ‘gardener’ to enjoy everything a garden has to offer.

As the proud holder of qualifications in garden design and horticulture from the world-renowned Royal Horticultural Society, I’ve been privileged to work on garden designs for all sorts of clients, from private home owners to corporate clients and from hotels to nursing homes.

If you want your garden to enhance your home and your life, if thoughtful design, creative but practical solutions and attention to detail matter to you, then I think we’re going to get along, so let’s talk!

What Clients Say…

“We found the whole process excellent, thoroughly professional and very engaging. All our needs and requests were met by you on every level”

H Williams, Co Clare

Anne takes a visionary approach to garden design. When Anne came to us a few years ago, we only had a vague idea of what we wanted. However, by the end of our first meeting we had a huge amount of ideas which Anne transformed into a garden plan which was exactly right for us. She is highly knowledgeable about plants and what works where and how to use hard and soft landscaping to best effect. Her plans are a work of art in themselves and easy to follow with step- by-step instructions and accurate measurements. This is a big help, whether you plan to do the work yourself or employ a builder/landscaper. We now have a garden which complements our home perfectly”

Linda Ford, Galway

“Anne worked on our garden design for what could only be described as a challenging site. Anne's creative vision turned our gravelly, uneven mess into what we can now see as our future dream garden which can be worked on over time at our leisure. I was most impressed with Anne's ability to extract from us exactly what we wanted in our garden when we struggled to put it into words ourselves. Anne also managed to complete our project under budget!

Barbara Eivers, Clara Co Offaly

“ I knew what I wanted but had no idea how to describe it, let alone create it. Anne was brilliant. She understood what I was looking for and delivered a design that is a collage of colour, shapes, textures and movement. Anne created the dramatic focal point that our modern house design needed and I am delighted with it.”

Sean Kennedy, Co Galway

“I have to say it was the best money I ever spent. From our initial consultation, Anne took on board what I wanted this space to deliver for me and my famil. Our garden turned out more beautiful than I could ever have anticipated. Anne listened and delivered a space that my whole family can now enjoy. Anne was fantastic value for money and I would go so far as saying she saved us thousands. I could not recommend Anne Byrne Garden Design highly enough”

Noreen McKenzie, Galway City

Anne Loves…

Here are some of the things that make me tick!

Inspiration

Art, architecture, music and literature are just a few of the many things that provide me with inspiration.  An enquiring mind is critical to creativity, so whether it’s Christian Dior at the V&A or a Bruce Springsteen concert, if I can get a ticket, I’ll be there – to look, listen and learn.

Places

You’ll often find me on the move – I’m fascinated by different landscapes and how we as people relate to our surroundings.  Cities, lakes, mountains, islands – and of course great gardens – are among the places I visit as often as I can.

Things that grow

I grew up in the Burren in the West of Ireland with a love for wild plants and flowers.  It was the chance to combine a love of plants with an interest in people that led me towards garden design.  From the Chelsea Flower Show to the local nursery, I’m always making friends with new plants – but only the very best performers make it into my planting plans.

People

Good designers understand that gardens are really about people, not plants (but ssshhh…. there’s no reason at all why plants need to know this!)  I love finding out what makes people tick, so getting together with other humans, whether that’s a Celebration Garden launch or a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party – is one of my favourite things to do.

Harmony

I garden organically myself, and while I realise this isn’t practical for everyone, it’s my way of staying friends with nature and the planet.  Creatures great and small are an endless source of fascination and always welcome in my garden.

Design

Good design makes me happy.  Bad design drives me nuts.  Our everyday lives, not to mention our homes and gardens, depend on good design for comfort, safety, and (if you’re anything like me) sanity.  So I’m always interested in how things work, look and feel, from a well- balanced watering can to a seat that feels just right.
